Organisational profile:

The Permanent University is a scientific, cultural and social program that is developed by the University of Alicante and is aimed at promoting not only Science and Culture, but inter-generational relationships as well, with a view to improving the quality of life that the older generation enjoys and encouraging their active participation in dynamic social and community activities throughout the province.

Universidad permanente Logo The Permanent University was inaugurated in 1999 and now has 900 students scattered among its 4 university centres at which a program of 120 different courses are conducted, all complimented by a wide range of cultural activities (work-shops, seminars, publications, theatre, cultural visits, etc.), in collaboration with the Students Association, which participates actively, and co-ordinates with the Office of the Vice-President of Extracurricular Activities of the University.
The program's most outstanding feature is its great dynamism, its active student participation program and the great number of foreign students involved, thanks to the strategic locations of the University's centres (the Mediterranean coast).
In April 2002, the UPUA organised the 6th National Encounter on University Programs for Elderly People, which was attended by 350 congressmen.

We joined the EuCoNet project in order to:

  • To foster the continuous education of adults within a cosmopolitan atmosphere of an international university.
  • To try out different ways of autonomous learning under diverse conditions and educational traditions, employing the latest in computer and telecommunications technology (ITC) to promote international co-operation among groups.
  • To encourage research on the teaching methods employed in the University's programs for adults in which their participation is dynamic.
  • To assist elderly people in adapting to the rapid changes of our modern era.
  • To encourage elderly people to learn about new telecommunications technologies and languages through research.

ARE THEY TYPICAL OF OUR COUNTRY?

Social and cultural setting of the Province of Alicante
Alicante finds itself in a privileged situation for the development of international relations, since it has some of the largest communities of foreign residents in Europe. Now numbering about 100.000 people from different countries of the European Union, the colony continues to increase, thanks to the creation of a boarder-free zone within the European Community, which greatly facilitates the steady influx of elderly Europeans. Most of them come to stay as retired residents in this region, principally English and German citizens.
