The University of Strathclyde was founded in Scotland as a place of useful learning, to make higher education available to all, and to combine excellence with relevance. It aspires to be a dynamic top-ranking European University dedicated to excellence through its core mission of promoting useful learning.

The Centre for Lifelong Learning is one of the service departments of the University. It promotes the concept of a lifelong learning society by providing an extensive range of day and evening classes for the people of Glasgow and its surroundings. It is ideally situated with its city centre location served by buses, trains, underground and accessible cheap parking.

Within the Centre is the Senior Studies Institute(SSI), established in 1991, as a centre for lifelong learning for people over 50. Approximately 2000 students register every year for activities. As well a programme of Learning in Later Life (3L) the Institute creates opportunities for its students to use their learning and life skills in a range of socially valuable contexts - as family and community members, volunteers, or to prepare for work or career change.

The Computer Buddy programme is one of the volunteer activities that harnesses the energy, enthusiasm and expertise of older students. Others are campus guiding, patient support at the Southern General Hospital's Spinal Injury Unit (SPIN), 50+ Challenge careers advice, 3L Student Association volunteers, mailing support for the University (Tuesday Club) and participation in research projects. Lesley Hart was Head of the Institute for ten years and has been instrumental in shaping its progess. Now as Director of the Centre for Lifelong Learning she continues to take a close interest in its development.
