"LiLL" - European Network Learning in Later Lifewww.lill-online.netThe project “LiLL” has its roots in the ideas and aims of the European Network „Learning in Later Life“ founded in Ulm in December 1995. This network is an amalgamation of university-level institutions of continuing education for the third age and other educational organisations from 18 European countries. The focus of interest is academic continuing education for older adults. The founding of this network was a direct result of the European Expert meeting "Competence and Productivity in the Third Age", held at the University of Ulm in February 1995, where 159 persons of 19 different countries took part. This meeting has shown the importance of international co-operation, information and exchange in this field. The questions asked here were:
As an answer to these questions, within the framework of the project "LiLL" and with the support of its project partners in France, Italy, the Netherlands, Great Britain and Finland, ZAWiW who was the co-ordinating office of this project, has created a quadrilingual online information system on the subject of academic continuing education www.LiLL-online.de intended for senior students as well as professionals working in the field of education of older adults in order to inform and to encourage ongoing discussions, co-operation and exchange. Another important aspect of this online platform was the introduction to the use and the benefits of the new communication technologies for seniors education. The three year project “LiLL” was funded by the Federal ministry for the family, seniors, women and youth, Bonn and the Socrates programme of the EU until last year. The pages of the network site continue to be maintained with the help of senior volunteers and new data and information are continually being added. The network “LiLL” has given rise to many contacts and exchanges, also partnerships on a national as well as international level. As the situation of access to the new communication technologies has changed rapidly over the years and the Internet became accessible not only to professionals in the field but also in growing numbers to senior students, the next step in this development was a design of meaningful subjects in the field of continuing education which would promote learning co-operations amongst senior students in Europe.
