Commentary on “SOLiLL” PROJECT

Antoine Sanchis
Université Tous Ages, Université Tous Ages in Lyon

I was very proud and honoured to lead the Group of senior students of UTA , Université Tous Ages in Lyon (France), which is a part of Université Lumière Lyon2.
What remains in my mind now, at the moment of closing the files ?
The objectives of the project SoLiLL were extremely ambitious :
to test and compare self-determined forms of learning under the various national conditions and educational traditions
to demonstrate the potential of the new communication technologies for cross-national co-operation in such groups
to test the applicability of the new possibilities for creative expression and presentation in overcoming language barriers .
Therefore it has been a big and constant challenge for the co-ordinators of the six European countries involved to solve problems such as :
the tremendous difficulties created by the “language barriers” and distance of groups,
cultural differences determined by education and traditions, leading to misunderstandings generating lack of interest in communication with “foreigners,”
learning to use, and at the same time using, computers and the new technologies for communication,
leading a team of senior people, fostering and channelling initiatives and maintaining interest and motivation, my own as well as that of the other members of the team, during a long period of almost two years.

I have much appreciated the method “Self organised learning by research”, which we have been able to implement, in spite that no one in our group was familiar with the methods of social research.

Being under pressure in my position of co-ordinator, I had no time to do research myself on the thematic subject developed by our Group of students, but from the discussions with my colleagues I have learned very much about the history of Lyon, my city of adoption where I am living for more than 40 years.

The “Multilingual Forum” developed for trans-national communication between senior students in the various partner countries, has been a very challenging subject. I was very involved in this one, and I regret that due to the limited time we had for the implementation it was tested only on a small scale. I do hope that in a near future a complimentary project shall be launched, enabling to test and improve the method further.

Last, but not least, I have very much appreciated the contacts with Carmen, Gaby, Hervé, Mariano, Markus, Ramon, Rein, and some other participants in the project. A friendly relationship has started to grow, which I will do my best to maintain in future.
I also sincerely thank the European Union and Université Tous Ages which have made all this possible, by funding the project SoLiLL.
