The Group

Stand:

The seniors from the project partner group in Arnhem

Bert Pieters

Born 1939. Married, two children. Served many years as process control consultant for an international chemical company. Retired since 1999. Hobby’s: Photography and history. Joins this study program to prepare himself for the future.

Hanneke ter Burg

Profession: teacher on a High school in Dutch Language and Literature, also occupied with guidance, counseling and coaching. After my children left our family house I’m living alone. Being a younger senior I’m thinking of other living forms within the next ten years. That’s my motivation to join the U3A at the Volksuniversiteit Arnhem.

Hannie Pelleboer-Beuker

Born in 1923. Living in Arnhem in a 4-room apartment. My husband, who was an army-chaplain died 12 years ago. Our only son, who graduated at the Utrecht University in literature, was killed in a car accident by a drunken driver. He was 28. It happened 10 years ago.
I’m a lawyer. During my marriage I teached law at schools. Later I was appointed for ten years in the board of our national TV. In my spare time I was active in my political party and I was elected as a member of the county council of the province Gelderland. I was in office for 11 years.
I’m joining this project, because I’m convinced that you have to consider your housing situation, when you are getting older before it is too late to make your own decisions.
I hope that this project may contribute to European rules for housing for seniors and may strengthen European cooperation.

Huibert J. Poot

Age 63, married, three children. Worked about 20 years in food product en process development /improvement and about 10 years on environmental issues at an international concern. Hobbies: photography, pouring bronze (making small statues) watching nature, gardening and maintenance of an over 100 years old house. Joins this study program to keep his brains in good condition by using them and because the subject is related to his future.

Jacques Bakkers

Married, 2 children, Born 1934,
I’m secretary of the Arnhem Board of cooperative Organizations for Senior citizens.
The crucial question to find out is: how can you make senior citizens make their own decisions on their life- and housing conditions.

C.G. (Kees) van der Lee

Married, two children and two grandchildren; retired since 1 September 1998; was serving an international chemical company as “political toxicologist” during more than 30 years; reasons to participate in the project are: the subject of the study as chosen by the Volksuniversiteit Arnhem, social contacts and learning by research.

Nelleke Renaud-Staalenburg

Being an ex-chemistry teacher and a curious person too, new applications of the media are rousing my interest. From my very old parents(in law) more than 90 years old I experience their emotions related to their growing dependency of care.
They are still living on their own in big cities. It is because of this I like to get an insight into the changing situation in the Netherlands concerning the care and housing facilities for senior people. I like to share this insight with others, EC wide!

Wieke Lameris

Born 1940, two sons and three grandsons, studied Dutch Language and Literature.
Worked as a teacher and later on as a manager at a college for Adult Education. Special interests: Implementing the Open Learning System, Disabled students, Dutch as a Second Language.
Retired since February 2001.
Hobby’s: Literature, modern art, architecture and gardening.

Rein Mulder

I was a general practitioner and since two years I’ve been working as a volunteer for the Volksuniversiteit in Arnhem, an eighty three year old institute for adult education courses.
The U3A-workinggroup, which I’ve have joined, is responsible for the annually curriculum.
It’s exciting to join this special international project and I hope to learn a lot from the international cooperation.

Doke Doude van Troostwijk

Born in 1940. Married, mother, grandmother. Lived over 20 years in foreign countries (Indonesia, Canada, Latin America). Worked 10 years as a medical laboratory technician. I like travelling and was very pleased to get a job as a travel guide for senior groups seven years ago. I joined the program to get to know my way in “senior- and computer land”.

Florence Frederiks-Lockefeer

My name is Florence Frederiks, my age is 54 and I’m married and have 3 grown-up children. Until two years ago I worked at the Volksuniversiteit in Arnhem. There is not one special reason for me joining the group. I’m just curious about the way elder people live in other countries and look forward to meet them.

Ineke Mentink-Zuiderweg

1939, historian, former teacher adult education. Hobbies: reading, especially English literature and following university courses. ( sometimes only for seniors, sometimes not) I join this program because I’m interested in the culture differences within Europe, moreover I hope that it will make me more aware of my future possibilities.
