Not always have women got the right to vote, to fill lecture halls, nor to study for a profession that they had chosen. In Germany, it was only since 1911 possible for women to study and since 1919 to vote. It is owing to Elisabeth Selbert that equality between genders had been incorporated into the Basic Law in 1949. But it was not before 1954, that women were allowed to pursue a profession and have a bank account without the consent of their husbands.
The modern women's studies have made us aware that until today gender equality had been realized only partially.
In this website we are presenting women who changed the society: they were politically engaged or broke out from the traditional women’s roles. We present women from Germany and abroad, who were active in various fields.
