Zuidlaarder BolStand:"The Zuidlaarder Bol"
For over 8 centuries a big annual fair has been held in my birthplace Zuidlaren On a day like this the village attracts more than 150,000 visitors. Originally this day was a cattle market-day but through the years a fun fair and a fair have been added. On the occasion of the annual fair a very special currant loaf is baked: ¨The Zuidlaarder bol¨. In the past the ¨Drentse bol¨ was a well-known treat (Zuidlaren is situated in the province of Drente) but in the 20th century this bread adapted the name ¨Zuidlaarder bol¨. One would think that the ¨bol¨, because of its name, had the shape of a ¨ball¨, but no - it is a flattened round bread. It is not very clear when the name ¨Zuidlaarder bol¨ was first introduced, possibly 10 to 20 years before I was born, but I've got the feel that the name has always been the same. On the market place the ¨Zuidlaarder bol¨ is being sliced and sold with some creamy butter on top, but every visitor of the Annual Fair takes one real ¨Zuidlaarder bol¨ home. |
