The Significance of Bread, in Life and
in Art

We can say that, relatively recently, according to the age
of the world, bread has become an important art material, both inside and
outside; this quality, of course, lagging behind its prime importance as a life
companion to those whose geographical situation permits its production and
guarantees the survival of the most needy. Wheat, maize and rye are plants whose
grains are tranformed into flour to be cooked as bread, or in less elaborate
ways, and which feed half the world; although we know that the other half, who
live in vast areas generally less developed, substitute rice, tapioca, etc, for
bread. In our society ¨a bit of bread with whatever else¨is something which
allows us to stay fit and enjoy life. ¨A filled roll!¨ This is one of the most
common phrases, most often repeated in life, to express the most often expressed
wish.
