A self-study-group in a non-universitary institute

Stand:

A self-study-group in a non—universitary institute

Rein Mulder and Ingeborg Paijens, U3A Volksuniversitaet Arnhem

Between ideal and reality

Summary

Appointing a paid co-ordinator can present difficulties for non-university institutes. A possibility is to train participants of the self-study-groups for coaching after the first project.
By emphasising the transparency of the decision-making and relational aspects of the self-study-groups from the beginning, the involvement of the participants can be elevated.

The U3A has different faces

The Université de Troisième Age or the University of Third Age has different forms of organisation.
a) the original French framework, with the UTA connected with a university;
b) the English framework: more a society, where education is just a part of the work.
In Arnhem we work with the English framework.

The U3A working-group in Arnhem

Started in 1982, it is the oldest U3A in the Netherlands. For practical reasons, the workgroup is linked with a ‘Volksuniversiteit’, an institute for adult education. Each year, about 330 courses will be organised in this combination. The U3A is responsible for a tenth of this amount.

Philosophy of the Arnhem U3A

Making programs for the U3A age-group, the 55+ age, with special attention to needs of this group:
  • themes
  • program, for example programs just in day time
  • method: less teaching, more participating;
  • with attention to meeting: the intention is to bring like-minded in contact with each other.
