Self-managed learning

Stand:

8. New communication technologies as driving force of the knowledge society!

The new information and communication technologies make possible the integration of text, graphics, photo images, sound, film (video) in one media.

Offline media (for example CD-ROM) and online media (for example the Internet) open new possibilities for quick and efficient exchange and creative processing of information.

Examples of application areas/services of the communication technologies:
  • electronic mail
  • online banking
  • online shopping
  • tele-medicine
  • possibilities of online continuing education

9. Effects of the new communication technologies

Working world:
  • company networks
  • teleworking
Services:
  • for example "intelligent" home technologies
Educational areas:
  • for example research for experts' views in the Internet
  • information from international libraries and data banks
  • virtual global universities and adult education centres
  • possibilities of continuing education from home
  • mediation of information in all languages
    (Delphi-Studie 1998)

10. The new communication technologies require media competency as a new key qualification

Media competency can be defined as an ability
  • to be familiar with the media and be able to gain new qualifications independently at any time
  • to orient oneself in the media world in a confident and responsible way
  • to perceive, process and understand media contents, to assess them appropriately and eventually intervene in the media process (Source: Forum Info 2000, AG4, 1998, p.10)
