Memories of Brno

Words and pictures by Peter Macfarlane

Wednesday 19th.

Val, Jean, Eric and I flew from Glasgow via Amsterdam to Prague, and then were driven for 2½ hours by minibus to the Hotel Continental, Brno. (Our fifth member, John, arrived the next day as he had a teaching commitment.) There was a light, patchy covering of snow on the fields as we drove east along a motorway which looked like the M74 in the Scottish Borders, but rather more bumpy as the road seemed to be made of concrete panels with frost-damaged joints. The driver did not know Brno and we had an unscheduled tour of this beautiful city, with its floodlit churches on steep hillsides. Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic, with a population of almost 400,000.

When we arrived we quickly deposited our luggage and went to the 1st floor restaurant for the Welcome Reception. We were greeted by Lenka Shromazdilova, the co-ordinator of the Brno team, with the sad news that Professor Petr Vavrín (Chairman of the board of the University of the Third Age at Brno), had had a heart attack while skiing. However the danger was over and a heart operation would sort things out. It was good to see again the people we had met in Ulm last October. We ate a hearty meal of pork and vegetables with excellent Czech refreshments.
