The Internet from benches in the centre of Prostėjov(www.novinky.cz)Since Friday the inhabitants of Prostėjov and visitors to the town have been able to surf the Internet for free in front of Prostėjov Town Hall on T. G. Masaryk Square. This has been made possible by an aerial installed on the Town Hall building, which transmits a signal to the surrounding area allowing those using portable computers to connect to the web, attend to their e-mail and search for information from all over the world. 19 September, 3.01 p.m. PROSTĖJOV We are the first town in the country to provide our citizens with this service, as we wish to support new technology and access to information. There has been a huge response to this project. We have even been visited by representatives of a certain bank which is interested in expanding this technology to other parts of Prostėjov and provide this service to the towns population, journalists were told by Deputy Mayor of Prostėjov Vlastimil Uchytil (ODS). Wi-Fi Wireless connection is made possible by Wi-Fi technology, which is supported by the majority of newer types of computer. A Wi-Fi card, which costs from around 2,500 to 10,000 CZK, can be installed in older models. Thanks to sponsoring the technical equipment needed to cover the square with a wireless Internet signal cost Prostėjov just 25,000 crowns. Operating costs have not, according to Uchytil, been calculated yet, since they will depend on the result of a tender invited by the Town Hall for a provider of telecommunication services. Certain companies offer this type of connection to the Internet free-of-charge. Boys with computers instead of girls We anticipate the square being packed with people with notebooks immediately following the official launch of the service. Im curious to see whether our young boys will then be sitting on the benches with portable computers instead of young ladies. On the other hand it would be a little sad, since most of the girls were beautiful, said Uchytil. He added that Prostėjovs councillors want to use the same Internet connection technology inside the Town Hall building. Now the guests at one of Prostėjovs guesthouses also have the opportunity of using wireless Internet connection. We consider this an extra service, which fits in with our plan of providing the kind of service standard seen in Western countries, said Frantiek Tichý, commercial director of the company which operates the guesthouse. |
