Contessi, D, (2001-2002):
Women and the Internet. Models of the Formation of Learning Intentions to Use the Net
Graduation Thesis, Faculty of Psychology, Padua University

In June 2002, at the Faculty of Psychology of Padua University, graduate student Daniela Contessi. discussed her graduation thesis under the supervision of Prof. A.Maria Manganelli.
The student examined the statistical sources showing the somewhat reduced female presence in the field of new technologies, in particular the computer and the Internet.
The investigation aimed at examining both the strength of women's intention of using the computer (or of improving their skills) and the determinants of such intention.
The research draws upon the theoretical field of psycho-social models of behavioural intentions.
166 women, aged 25 to 61 (average age 37.29) residing in the province of Bergamo (in the north of Italy).
Generally speaking, the women's attitude to the Internet is positive but the intention to learn/or to improve/ their using skills is rather weak.
However, women feel a certain social pressure for such learning and do not believe it to be unattainable.
The survey also intended to spot the Internet features that are perceived by women and how these features affect their learning intention: the internet is felt to be not friendly-user and unreliable although efficient.
Generally speaking, the characteristics of Internet that usually lead to its usage are those related to the aspect of "friendliness", but, as previously stated, the Internet is perceived as not friendly-user by the women in the survey, therefore less conducive to learning.
In conclusion, the Internet attracts women but in order to reinforce their learning intention it is essential:

1: to orientate women's information to the many opportunities offered by the Internet,
2: to adopt a more appealing interface together with net improvements,
3: to offer them a more reliable and economical usage of the Net.
