Maquila

Stand:

MAQUILA

José María López

It would be in the forties when the phrase, “thanks to the fact that we have Cartilla Maquilera, there’s bread in the house, and furthermore it’s white bread” was engraved in my mind. Remembering this period, asking around and doing some research, I have been able to draw the following conclusions.

My father was the owner of some land in the village of my paternal grandfather Juan, which he had inherited from him. From those who rented this land, he preferred to receive payment in sacks of wheat. This wheat was taken to the flour factory where it was milled, separating the husks of the wheat (bran) from the pure white flour. For this, the miller and the factory owner were paid in kind.
