Concluding Report

Stand:

A. Local processes.

A.1 How did we get involved in the SoLiLL-project?

The U3A-workgroup of the Volksuniversiteit takes care of the annual programming of the U3A courses.
In the beginning of the year 2000 a cycle of lectures and discussions about Senior Citizens and Living was started. During a quest for more information and potential speakers one contacted the Dutch Institute for Gerontology.
At that moment the NIG was still a partner in the LILL-network and initiated the contacts between U3A/Volksuniversiteit and ZAWiW.

A.2 Preparation and recruitment.

A.2.1 Preparatory project-group.

A project group consisting of 3 members did a preparatory study. The group studied the project application by ZAWiW. If necessary more information was requested from ZAWiW and after that advice was given to the Management of the Volksuniversiteit.
An important condition for the participation was the appointing of a project/study co-ordinator from outside the organisation to guarantee extra expertise for the supervision.
From consultation it became clear that only the participants could determine the level by combining their capabilities.
Besides the objectives of the SoLiLL-project there was also the objective of the U3A/
Volksuniversiteit; What can we learn form this project so that we as a U3A/Volksuniversiteit can continue this form of education in the future?
This local objective was quite compatible with the final goal of the SoLiLL-project, the making of a Cd-rom. Others may gain by our learning process.

A.2.2 Recruitment

Recruitment started with a special message in the winter brochure of the Volksuniversiteit in Arnhem in December 2000 containing an invitation for an informative meeting.
In this notice information was given about the international SoLiLL-project, the topic
Senior Citizens and Living and the self-study method.

A.2.3 Informative meetings.

The U3A/Volksuniversiteit organised two informative meetings in January and February 2001. Potential participants were informed about the SoLiLL objectives and the connection with the topic of Senior Citizens and Living. An other item that was discussed was the role of the U3A/Volksuniversiteit in supporting the project and the organising of courses.
The expected personal effort and financial support by the participants came also up for discussion.

The second meeting took place immediately after the first partner meeting in Ulm, which enabled our project co-ordinator to give more information.
The self-study group Arnhem was grouped together with Lyon and Granada in the Housing Group.
The conditions concerning theme and timing were discussed.
The theoretical framework, as agreed on at the partner meeting, was presented to the participants.
The framework comprised questions like:
What? What is the situation?
How? How do past, present and future compare?
Why? What is the explanation?
