Observation

Stand:

Major features

+ The observer attends every weekly meeting of the group (2 hours, each Monday morning); he sits at the same table as any other person in this project;
+ His task consists of...

  • taking notes about relevant aspects occurred along the group meetings;
  • connecting topics and aspects emerged through observation to in-depth interviews realised later to each person in the group;
  • acting as a permanent witness of the group progress in the project;
  • interpreting documents produced by the group in order to enrich his observation and evaluation.

Field notes

+ Condensed notes about group meetings (first order notes: What the members in the group say);
+ Expanded notes which shall feed, after the meetings, previous comments;
+ Interpretative notes including feasible explanations of some facts in the group (second order notes: What the investigator interprets about the saying of the members in the group).

Generally speaking, it is recommended that the observer does not decide upon what categories should base his work unless some field work -taking notes-- has been already done. It is precisely what we're trying to do now after six months of previous observation.

Units of analysis

Hereafter you'll find structured some units of analysis, categories, dimensions and indicators we propose to be implemented in our observation from now onwards. It goes without saying that this intends to be an open proposal, one which might be changed in the time to come.
