"SeniorenTreff Internet und Computer" STIC (Seniors' Meeting Point Internet and Computer) in Ulm

STIC is an information centre for senior citizens from Ulm and surroundings, who are interested in computer and the Internet use.

The participants of the EuCoNet conference in Ulm had the possibility to visit this institution on October 17th 2002.

It was founded by members of the ZAWIW SeNet group under the leading of Fritz Seyffert. The town of Ulm supplied the room and the computer equipment. It was opened in April 2002. In the computer room there are six working places equipped with computers connected to the internet and the teacher PC with image projector (see pictures).

The principle of the STIC group is "teaching of seniors by seniors". The activities of at present 19 members are as follows:

  • Advisory service (twice a week 3 hours).
  • Computer and internet workshops, e.g. basics of computer use, text and image processing, home banking, internet and e-mail, safety of computer use etc.
  • Home service, e.g. for installation of equipment and software. Of course this offer is time consuming and connected with higher costs.
  • Improvement of the members' knowledge by internal workshops
  • Monthly meetings for the organisation of all activities

The STIC had 165 senior "customers" at the end of 2002. Advisory service was used 125 times. There were 271 participants of workshops. Home service was called 15 times.
