French Baguette

Stand:

French bread / Baguette

Ineke Mentink

Introduction

On a sign of an old bakery was once written:
¨Bread is life, pastry the sunny side of it¨.
Arnhem has chosen for the sunny side: it came up with ¨Arnhems meisje¨ (Arnhem´s girl) - a well-known biscuit: puff-pastry with sugar on top.
In Arnhem a special flour is for sale: ¨miser flour¨. It is a mixture of leftover wheat + rye + maize. This mixture flour is being ground in a watermill dating back from 1470. After many years of not being used they started re-using it in 1985. Apart from this mill there is a windmill dating from 1849.
Both mills grind many varieties of corn. Yet there isn't anything like ¨regional Arnhems bread¨.
In view of ¨French bread¨ we will have a closer look at the expression ¨Bread is life, pastry the sunny side of it¨.

History

On the basis of 3 family photos (which state my commitment) dating 1952, 1972 and 2002 we will show you some social developments in the Netherlands[ ].
Between 1950 and 1960 only 57% of the Dutch went on holiday, most of them stayed in the Netherlands. Those who went abroad took pictures of things they could not by in their own country.

First introduction of French bread in 1952.
