5. Respect towards Bread

Did people in former times had more respect for bread than nowadays?
Did they economize bread better?
Does the place where bread was stored tell us something about the respect towards it?

In most of the countries there is the opinion that in former times people had more respect towards bread than today. This has to do with the general shortage of bread at those times. One economized bread better and there were religious reasons forbidding to throw bread away. In the Netherlands the majority of the interviewed persons were of the opinion that the economical use of bread has nothing to do with respect, they thought this a weird question.

In Czech Republic there is a respect towards bread but it is not clear from the report if the repect was higher in the past than today, and no report was made concerning the place where bread was stored. In Germany, the way of storing and keeping bread fresh as long as possible and not throwing rests of bread away was brought in a direct connection with the respect for bread.

Bread bins for storing bread are known nearly in all countries, also ceramic jars and moist linen cloths, special bread cupboards were used in the country side in most countries .
