Remarks of the Italian group about the intercultural working group
What I say here is the result of extensive discussion within the group of Italian
volunteers who partecipated in the Intercultural training Group AG12.
The discussion of the AG12 Group began with a reflection of the meaning of
“culture” and the value attributed to this term.
The AG12 Group there seems to have found a substantial agreement on the fact
that the culture of a people or of an social group is the result of an historical
process where interaction and exchanges in any case occur.
However, this reflection was particularly thorough only in terms of individual
behaviour of members of the Working Group, although social problems (togheter
with political ones) have emerged repeatedly in the discussions of the AG12
Group.
It may be that our expectations in this regard have been influenced by the fact
that mass immigration in Italy is a reletvely recent phenomenon compared
to what happened in other European countries.
In the discussion above we were expecting (from people living in countries
where mass immigration has already occurred since long time) pieces of advice
for the pratical activity of our associations when interacting with immigrant
communities. But, of course, this was not the purpose of our Intercultural
Group.
