Volleyball is a part of my life

Volleyball is a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started training, when I was 10 and I am still playing it at my age of 25. In this time I was playing it professionally in first Slovenian league, than when I started with college there was less and less time to play professionally, so I decided to share my knowledge and passion with others, who also like volleyball.  I contacted The Slovenian Volleyball Organization and asked them about voluntary volleyball trainings for girls in primary school.  Trainers were needed in many primary schools in Ljubljana, but I was responsible for two schools for three different age groups. From 7 –  9 years old, 9 – 11 and 11 – 15. With the youngest group we started our learning through games with ball, so that they got the feeling and sense of space. After few months we decided that we are prepared for our fist competition. We were surprised after we won the game, so that encouraged us to enroll in primary school league, for different age groups. We got ourselves new uniforms, we practiced even harder and we managed to win a few games. At the end of league we finished on third place and got medals. All hours of my time and even few of my nerves were worth of it, when I saw the happiness in these girls eyes when they received the medals.  I believe that this is the whole point of volunteering , when you see and feel that you have done something goof for other, that you brought happiness into her/his eyes even just for a minute.

Sport is very important in the lives of young people, they learn to fight for a goal and to accept the defeats.

  2. Hi Tina

Your story about teaching young girls volleyball on a voluntary basis was very interesting. It is so important to involve girls in sport at a young age to ensure that keeping fit and haelthy becomes part of their daily lives. We have an issue in Scotland where many young girls drop out of sporting activity. This is an a exciting project which we could replicate in Scotland.
